Sight words are frequently used words that often don't follow the rules and therefore need to be practiced and memorized. We will practice these words every week- printing, spelling, and reading them. Please practice these words at home with your child to ensure mastery. Knowing these words will improve their reading and writing skills. If your child has memorized a word, than it can be removed from the 'practice' list and can be occasionally practiced. If your child knows all these words then there is no need to keep practicing them! Students who know many sight words will be working on alternate reading activities. We will learn a few new ones each week. Occasionally we will send home our paper 'practice books.' These books can be kept at home for extra practice if needed, or recycled if it is too easy. Some suggestions for practice include:
flashcards (make your own with recipe cards)
games (memory, go fish, spellback, hangman)
spelling practice (students print the words read by someone)
paper 'practice books' (sent home from school occasionally)
